Windmills Power

At the end, we can also realize how a structure or a machine can make us realize that sometimes, the basics of life in general are forgotten only to see that we go back to it because no matter how far we go, the essential needs like safe environmental practices are the key to our survival.

When wind rotates a wheel made of adjustable blades and is converted to energy, the machine or structure is called a windmill. In the pat these machines were used to grind grain into flour and were designed by skillful craftsmen usually on site just using hand tools. Windmills became popular during the early 18th century in Europe where development of the machine progressed. The harness of steam power during the nineteenth century largely replaced windmills as power generating structures but nowadays, windmill technology is experiencing a revival what with the invention of wind turbine as alternative to fossil fuels in the upcoming years.

Wind actually has been used by man to power up machines since long time ago. Perhaps we can go back as the earlier times when wind was used to propel sail boats to wherever they want to go. The first recorded windmill design was found to originate in Persia in A.D. 500-900. The initial use was to pump water and later transformed into grinding grain. Light wood was used as blades. The design was known as panemone.

China could have used windmills earlier but the dated vertical-axis windmills can only go as early as A.D. 1219 according to date obtained by archeologists. The Dutch and the English introduced the tower mill. The body is fixed and the mill’s blades were adjustable where the wind is. The English automated the machines for more efficiency. These became electric motors in Europe during the pre-industrial world.

Nowadays, you can still see windmills but mostly for pumping water on farms. In America, we can see the perfection of these structures during the nineteenth century. There came the Halladay windmill in 1854 then the Aermotor as well as Dempster designs. The last two still being used today. And we can know that there were about six millions that were constructed from 1870 to 1970 as recorded.

Windmills are windmills. They power up to make things easier for us. The last hundred years does not make any design changes on the machines It is only now that we can see some major improvements what with the US government trying to research and develop wind power but not in its traditional windmill types. They will come as wind turbines to generate electric power for mass consumptions. Of course, the principle is the same as the windmill but structural improvements will be the outcome of the latest technology available today. Thanks to the windmill power, its existence throughout the years can serve as a model to a possible greener environment. Funny, it seems we all go back to basics in the end. Somehow, if we were more thoughtful in the past, perhaps we don’t need to go back and realize our beginnings are actually our present.
